This is a video of my acceptance speech from June, 2017 when I was honored by ALSAC (the fundraising arm of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital) for my fundraising and awareness raising efforts for St. Jude. This was at the 60th anniversary gala, and my speech tells the story of why Juggling for Jude is so important. I’m now older and have spoken many times since this speech, but I think it tells my story well. Thank you for watching!
My name is Hollis, and I’m 15 years old. I happen to be a pretty good soccer juggler. The rules for my juggling are that I have to alternate feet and I can’t use my thighs. This makes it more challenging and also more helpful for soccer skill development.
In the fall of 2013, when I was 8, my mom told me about St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which is a hospital for kids who are just like me, except that they have cancer. They are treated FREE OF CHARGE at St. Jude, getting the best cancer care in the entire world. I did some research on the hospital, fell in love, and wanted to help! The following summer, when I was 9, I started using my soccer skills to fundraise for St. Jude’s lifesaving mission. I ended up raising $34,458.56 that summer, thanks to so many generous people!
In the summer of 2015, when I was 10, I did it again. With the help of some professional soccer players who helped spread the word (including Julie Foudy, Kelley O’Hara, and Shea Salinas), I juggled and raised money, making my total after two summers more than $72,000! I also started a JUGGLING FOR JUDE CHALLENGE. Just video yourself juggling, post it on social media, use the hashtag #jugglingforjude, and then head over to my DONATE page to donate a penny or a dollar (or ten dollars!) per juggle! (Currently, the #jugglingforjudechallenge has gone global. The idea is to juggle for a minute, post a video on social media, tag my account and some friends, and donate $10 on my website).
The third summer (2016) was AMAZING! Thanks to the generosity of so many wonderful people, I passed the $100,000 mark for St. Jude on the last day of August that year, which was my goal!
The juggling and work continued, because kids with cancer can’t be cured with $100,000 alone! Throughout 2017, I juggled at special events and all through the summer. I earned some great awards and got so give a couple of really memorable speeches, one at St. Jude at the 60th anniversary gala of ALSAC, the fundraising arm of the hospital. And guess what? We passed the $200,000 mark for St. Jude! Later, in 2018, it was the $300,000 mark. And we did it!
But again, kids with cancer aren’t cured with $300,000, alone, so I’m still at it, juggling, teaching at clinics, public speaking, and doing as much outreach as I can. I I won’t stop till kids no longer get cancer, and I hope you’ll support Juggling for Jude as my move forward with my mission! Next stop: $400,000 for St. Jude!
Here’s a video of my current record of 4,202 juggles, which I got on July 1, 2019! It took 44 minutes, 34 seconds, which is a pretty long time to be juggling! I’ll keep juggling every day, because I know that the more I juggle, the more money I can raise!
In a nutshell, here’s how JUGGLING FOR JUDE works. You can help in one of 2 ways:
1. Choose an amount and head over to my St. Jude personal fundraising page to donate directly, now.
2. Take the JUGGLING FOR JUDE CHALLENGE and post your video and then donate a penny or dollar per juggle.
THANKS FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
